RSS Aggregator not a good option

It appears that we cannot subscribe to a secured board's RSS feed. At least I don't see a way to do so.

While this forum is polished and looks nice, I would prefer a way to simply get the messages. I use Google Reader for this purpose for my other forums and such. It enables me to quickly see the latest messages and to quickly reply. I enjoy interacting with the community and helping out when I can. However, time is precious and this needs to be as efficient as possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Timmus,

Thanks for the feedback and for bringing this to our attention.  You certainly should be able to subscribe to the RSS feed on the private forums just as you can on the public forums.  I am checking into why this option isn't there and I'll let you know what I find.

We enjoy having you here on the community and appreciate your suggestions for making the experience a good one.

Thanks,

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Timmus,

I am so sorry - I thought that the RSS Feed feature would be available at the board level even on private boards, however, I stand corrected. Our software provider has informed me that it is isn't available due to issues with authentication.

A couple of suggestions on efficiency.  You may already know about this option, but just in case I thought I would share it with you.  There is an option in your profile called Daily Digest.  Choosing this option basically batches your new message subscription emails into a collection which is sent out once a day at 5am based on your server's time zone.

Here's another one that I'm hoping you will find helpful.  I just added a couple of links to most of the category level pages for recent posts and recent threads. When you visit the community you can click here first to view the most recent activities throughout the community in one list.

As always, thanks for your feedback and for your participation on the community.  We do feed these suggestions to our software provider with the hopes that it may be incorporated into future versions of the software and improve the community experience over time.

In the meantime, if anyone else has suggestions on this topic, please jump in.

Thanks,

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Hi Tawny

Great that you are taking the feedback as intended. With anything new it takes time - but, you are dealing with people who just "need to get the job done" and don't care too much for anything that slows them down!

1) Any way you can feedback that the navigation is too slow - is there a way to display threads without doing entire page refreshes ? Check out facebook etc. for their methods i.e. in page updates etc.

2) Any reason why, when you reply, the html render control takes so long to initialise? I hit reply, start typing and I just get  | | | | for a while. Then, it pops up with the text ? (this isn't limited to lithium - have seen it happen on other sites too but, again, a barrier to usage.

Thanks!
Mike

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Tawny, no need to apologize. I expected that the secured boards would prove an issue with RSS. Hopefully the development team has success solving the issue.

Regarding the recent lists - this is great. However, my true colors prove me to be both a beggar and a chooser :smileyhappy:. Is it possible to arrange the Request Access content and the Additional Resources content so that we dont have to scroll down to see the messsages? The list of messages and threads is the most valuable and I would prefer to see it at the top of the page.

Thanks a bunch for actively participating and listening to feedback.

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Mike,
I have a similar experience on both on my computers.  I recorded the times moving from one board post to another, and it was as too long.  I had lithium walk through the same keystrokes, and their experience was not the same.  Can you tell us what browser you use, and are you viewing message in linear mode or threaded?  I have asked for some guidance on what we can do to make performance improvements, but is difficult when they are not able to recreate our experience.
We will share you feedback below on both design elements, but I hope we can make improvements with what we have today.
Thanks for any additional insight you can provide.

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Hi Tawny

I would imagine it's because they are hosting it (unless you guys are?) and, therefore, "local" to them. Ask them to get a remote desktop or something to your machine so they can see it 1st hand.

I'm using IE 8.x and Threaded mode.

Regards

Mike

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Hi Timmus,

Happy to listen, and I'm glad to hear the lists are helpful.  I had the same thought you did on the scrolling!  I would love to be able to change it, but unfortunately, this is not currently a supported feature.  The lists build dynamically and the content, including announcements and our Request Access and Additional Resources links, cascades down from our "home" page.  Today we don't have a way of affecting change on these lists, but hopefully at some point we will.

Thanks,

Tawny

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear your experiencing poor performance on the community.  I wanted to let you know that I have opened up a case (#2493) with our software provider asking them to investigagte the performance issues you are reporting.  As Kim mentions, she too has experienced these issues.  I'm on a mac, and I haven't had the same experience at all.  I will update you on this thread when I hear back from our provider.

Thanks,

Tawny

Re: RSS Aggregator not a good option

to eliminate IE as the issue - I just tried this in Chrome (by far the fastest browser around right now!) and it's a lot better - but still complete screen wipes/re-displays (whole screen goes white, then re-renders) - which is actually unusual for Chrome.

Also, I just noticed this error too (ini the browser bar):
